In a type of heart transplant operation, namely a heterotopic transplant, the patients old, damaged heart is left in place, and the new heart is attached in parallel to it.
That way, should the new heart be rejected, the old heart can still take over a bit of the functions and the patient won't die immediately.

Because of this, there are actually people around with two hearts.
